What Is Low Cost Group Health Insurance?

Low cost group health insurance is sometimes available to members of a particular group, such as employees. One reason this coverage can be affordable is because group plans have lots of people contributing. This sometimes means there are more services available for less money than the individual would receive if he or she were on a non-group coverage plan. Some of the benefits of a group plan may include reasonable premiums and insurance coverage at doctors offices, hospitals and pharmacies. In addition to being available to employees of certain companies, this type of group plan may also be offered to members of nonprofit organizations.

There are a variety of insurance companies which offer group coverage. Many of these companies use what is called an HMO, or health maintenance organization. This organization sets guidelines and policies and may restrict patients to particular doctors which are part of the network. Not every plan will restrict you to certain medical facilities but some will. In addition there may be limits as far as what is covered and how many visits of a certain type you can have in a year. For example, you may be allotted one routine physical per year. Some plans cover vision and dental health but may be limited to annual checkups. Depending on the type of policy you have, you may be responsible for a deductible and/or copayment for medical and/or pharmaceutical services.

Exactly what is covered under your group policy will be explained to you in detail by your insurance administrator. You will receive paperwork and literature which explains your benefits to you when you sign up for the coverage. If you have questions about your policy, you can speak to the person in charge of employee insurance at your workplace or call your insurance company directly. They can further explain your benefits and responsibilities to you if there is something you do not understand fully.

Health coverage through your employer may or may not cover your family. You may be able to get coverage for your spouse and/or children for an additional cost. It all depends on the specifications of your policy and what your employer covers for you. With every insurance plan there are advantages and disadvantages. If your employer offers low cost group health insurance it is likely going to be cheaper than what you would pay on your own. However you may not care for the restrictions imposed by such a plan.
